For example, a system advertised to automatically detect and neutralize zero-day exploits using advanced ML algorithms might, in reality, rely on pattern matching techniques that are easily bypassed by adaptive adversaries.

Acknowledging the potential limitations of relying solely on AI/ML in network security is crucial for fostering realistic expectations and prioritizing comprehensive defense strategies. Historically, network security relied on signature-based detection and rule-based systems. The promise of AI/ML was to overcome the limitations of these static approaches by offering adaptive and proactive threat detection. However, the effectiveness of any AI/ML system is intrinsically linked to the quality and volume of data it is trained on, as well as the algorithms employed.
